Pakistan 'sanctioned' murder of Saleem Shahzad: Mullen

Outgoing Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen has accused the Pakistani government of ordering the hit on Asia Times journalist Syed Saleem Shahzad. From the National Journal:

The United States believes the Pakistani government "sanctioned" the murder of a prominent Pakistani journalist who had been probing links between the country's security services and its Islamic militants, said Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

"It was sanctioned by the government," Mullen told journalists at the Pentagon on Thursday. "I have not seen anything to disabuse the report that the government knew about this."

Oddly enough, Mullen said that there was no evidence to prove that the Inter-Services Intelligence directorate, the powerful military intelligence branch, was behind Shahzad's assassination:

Mullen said he couldn't confirm press reports that Pakistan's powerful Inter-Services Intelligence agency had carried out Shahzad's murder. An array of U.S. military and intelligence officials believe the ISI killed Shahzad to prevent him from continuing a series of investigative articles about the infiltration of militants from al-Qaida and other extremist groups into Pakistan's military and intelligence services.

Mullen likely misspoke, as no one believes that President Zardari or Prime Minister Gilani would have ordered and executed the brutal murder of Shahzad. Mullen has been a firm supporter of the Pakistani military establishment and a leading advocate of close ties to Pakistan's security and intelligence services, despite ample evidence the Pakistanis are complicit in supporting the Taliban and other terrorist groups and are thus complicit in the murder of US troops in Afghanistan.

Sanctioned by the hapless Zardari government? Ridiculous! Adm. Mullen continues to try to pull his punches when it comes to his BFFs in the Pakistan military. The murder was sanctioned by the military leadership, and the trail of blood stops at Kayani's and Pasha's doorsteps. If Radko Mladic can be extradited to The Hague, so can Kayani, Pasha, Musharraf, Gul, and the rest of the murderous lot.

@Charu

By God, these devils (Kayani, Pasha, Musharraf, Gul) deserve the gallows more than Ratko Mladic! After all, they have the blood of NATO soldiers on their hands....

When do we "GET IT" and stop talking about our Pakistani Ally?
We have no "Friends" in Pakistan, only occasional members of their elite who can be rented for a short time. The raison d'etre of the Pakistani state from the days of Muhammad Ali Jinnah is to be a confrontational neighbor to India. WHEN, not "if" that War happens, the slaughter will be of Biblical Proportion and Pakistan will cease to be.

@Jimmy, well, Pasha is visiting Washington soon. Is there anything that the family of the slain Rabbi Holtzberg can do to have him arrested and charged for the brutal murders at Chabad House in Mumbai?

The latest diatribe by American press and senior members of administration implicating ISI in the murder without any evidence is yet another attempt to influence the outcome of the probe and increase pressure on Pakistan’s military. Those who have been following the story of Raymond Davis, a CIA operative caught with clear evidence of espionage and his contacts with banned terrorist organizations, will find striking similarities between handling by US administration and media of his arrest and journalist’s murder . The way this murder is being highlighted and the probe panel pressurized to incriminate ISI shows as if the slain journalist was another Raymond Davis working in Pakistan.
