State Department: Ansar al Sharia an alias for AQAP

The State Department has announced that Ansar al Sharia in Yemen is simply an "alias" for al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which is attempting to "rebrand itself." The Ansar al Sharia brand is being employed by al Qaeda-linked groups elsewhere, including in Tunisia and Libya.

The children were killed in an IED attack in Hadramout. Security forces detained two al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters in Sana'a. The military reportedly will receive four unarmed RQ-11 Raven drones.




President Hadi said the government is willing to negotiate with al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula if the terror group disarms. AQAP reportedly has withdrawn the bulk of its forces from Aden and Abyan and is regrouping in Marib, Al Jawf, and Sa'ada.

The chief of security for Al Mahfad district in Abyan said that more than 400 Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters, including Saudis and Pakistanis, have regrouped there. AQAP uses their bases in Al Mahfad to launch attacks in Sana'a, Abyan, Hadramout, Shabwah, and Marib.
