Defense Secretary Panetta warned of the increasing danger of cyberattacks on US civilian infrastructure; the US is "in a pre-9/ll moment," he said. Cyberattacks have already in some instances breached systems for US financial institutions; public transportation; and chemical, water, and electrical plants. The Pentagon is preparing new rules of engagement for cyberwarfare and has developed the ability to mount preemptive operations upon detection of an impending cyberattack.
A special US military task force of about 150 has been sent to Jordan to assist with the refugee situation, monitor Syria's chemical weapons, and provide support should the conflict spill across Syria's borders. Jordan is also becoming concerned that Islamist militants will enter Jordan from Syria.
Lt. Col. Andrew Wood, the former commander of a special US security team in Libya, told Congress at a hearing on the Sept. 11 Benghazi consulate attack that al Qaeda's presence in Libya "grows every day" and that the terror group is "more established than we are" there. Radical cleric Abu Hamza pled not guilty today to the 11 terrorism charges against him, and was assigned a trial date of Aug. 26, 2013. He asked to be referred to by his birth name, Mustafa Kamel Mustafa. Two other men extradited from the UK with Abu Hamza, Saudi native Khalid al-Fawwaz and Egyptian Adel Abdul Bary, received a trial date of Oct. 7, 2013.
