President Obama has asked the Pentagon to expand the list of potential targets for the proposed Syrian military intervention; the use of Air Force bombers is now being contemplated. The administration continued to lobby lawmakers to support the proposed strikes. US officials said they intercepted a message from the head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards Qods Force to Iranian-supported Shiite militia groups in Iraq ordering them to attack the US Embassy and other American interests in Baghdad if the US strikes Syria.
President Obama said he could order strikes in Syria even without authorization from Congress, and argued that the "red line" was not his but the world's. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 10-7 to authorize a military intervention in Syria. Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Secretary of State Kerry of lying about the strength of al Qaeda in the Syrian opposition. US officials are uncertain whether Syria could mount a bioweapons attack. The Pentagon said the US could incur billions of dollars in costs if it cancels military aid to Egypt.
Secretary of State Kerry urged support for a US military intervention in Syria, arguing that the US must show the Assad regime it cannot use chemical weapons with impunity. He said the intervention could include boots on the ground but not "with respect to the civil war." President Obama said the intervention would involve a "broader strategy" to upgrade the Syrian opposition while degrading the capabilities of the Assad regime. General Dempsey, head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate that Russia might help Syria replace assets destroyed by a US attack. Polls show that most Americans, from all parties, oppose the idea of intervening militarily in Syria. The top Democratic and Republican House leaders expressed support for the intervention.
