President Obama told the UN that the US will stay engaged in the Middle East and North Africa, with "all elements of our power, including military force," to ensure the free flow of energy from the region, dismantle terrorist networks, and forbid the use of chemical weapons or WMD. He also called for "consequences" if Syria fails to abide by the US-Russian deal to surrender its chemical weapons. The US and Russia have not yet agreed on a draft UN resolution on Syria's chemical weapons; Russia objects to the inclusion of a threat of military force. President Obama announced increased humanitarian aid for Syrian refugees and countries affected by the Syrian conflict. US officials are sending law-enforcement equipment to Nairobi.
The US is examining claims by Kenyan authorities that Americans were involved in the Shabaab massacre at a Nairobi mall. US citizen Abdel Hameed Shehadeh, 23, was sentenced to 13 years in prison for lying to the FBI about his attempts to join the Taliban or al Qaeda. He was an acquaintance of Adis Medunjanin, who along with several others was guilty of plotting to bomb New York subways.
A district court judge accepted the guilty plea of former Pfc. Eric Harroun to the lesser charge of conspiring to violate arms-control laws and sentenced him to time served. Harroun, who has admitted to fighting with the al Qaeda-affiliated Al Nusrah Front in Syria, had also been accused of providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization and conspiring to use destructive devices overseas. The White House said it is ready to engage in talks with Tehran about Iran's nuclear program: it is also telling Israeli officials the US will judge Iran by its actions, not its words.
