President Obama called Syria's acceptance of a Russian proposal that it give up its chemical weapons "a potentially significant breakthrough" and said his "preference consistently has been a diplomatic resolution to this problem." He said he would "absolutely" halt a US military strike if the weapons were successfully secured but was skeptical Assad would follow through on the pledge. Secretary of State Kerry described the proposed US military intervention as an "unbelievably small, limited kind of effort." A planned Sept. 11 Senate vote on the intervention was postponed for consideration of the Russian proposal. Despite vigorous lobbying by the administration, most Americans remain opposed to intervening militarily in Syria.
The Obama administration continued to press its case for a US military intervention in Syria, and said Saudi Arabia has endorsed the idea. Iraq said it will not be used as a base for a US intervention. Syrian president Assad denied authorizing the use of chemical weapons against Syrians and demanded proof of allegations to the contrary. White House Chief of Staff McDonough claimed that "everyone agrees" with the US account that blames the Assad regime for the Aug. 21 attack in Damascus.
The US evacuated some embassy staff in Beirut, Lebanon yesterday and urged Americans to avoid travel to Lebanon and to southern Turkey. President Obama returned from the G-20 summit without having persuaded a majority of the countries' leaders to back the proposed military intervention in Syria. The Treasury Department imposed sanctions on several individuals and businesses for Iranian oil sales.
