The European Court of Human Rights ruled that Britain can extradite notorious jihadist preacher Abu Hamza and four other suspected terrorists to the US for trial. Hamza has been charged with supporting al Qaeda and involvement in a fatal kidnapping. He and the other suspects - Babar Ahmad, Syed Tahla Ahsan, Adel Abdul Bary, and Khaled Al-Fawwaz - have three months to appeal. Al Qaeda warned Britain not to deport Abu Qatada, another Islamist cleric, to Jordan.
Mohammed Shabir Ali, of east London, was arrested two days ago and charged with terrorism offenses including attending to assist in an act of terrorism, and possession of a document by al Qaeda ideologue Anwar al Awlaki. Two other men and a woman, all from London and arrested the same day as Ali, remain in custody.
A court ruled that the government must return the passport of Hill Al-Jedda, an Iraqi. Jedda was arrested and imprisoned in Iraq from 2004 to 2007 for facilitating an explosives expert's entry into Iraq as well as serving as a terrorist recruiter. The government stripped him of his citizenship in 2007.
The government's top counterterrorism lawyer said that 52 suspected terrorists were held under the controversial control order program between 2005 and 2011. Under a more lenient system introduced in 2012, nine of the 52 suspects are still subject to certain restrictions.
