Haytham Rahmeh, the Syrian-born former leader of a Stockholm mosque, is said to have smuggled large quantities of weapons to Syrian rebels for the past 18 months. Rahmeh reportedly purchased the weapons primarily in Libya, but also in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and with the help of a group named the Commission for Civilian Protection transported them through Turkey to Syria. He is a member of the Syrian National Council and a former member of the Muslim Brotherhood. Weapons smuggling is a violation of Swedish law punishable by up to four years in prison.
German police have reportedly asked Swedish authorities to investigate a 28-year-old man from Västerås who is suspected of involvement with longtime jihadist Mullah Krekar and nine other people in plans to establish an Islamist terror network. Krekar is currently imprisoned in Norway, where he is serving a two-year sentence for making death threats.
The chief analyst for Säpo, the Swedish intelligence service, said that at least 30 Swedes are known to have traveled to Syria to fight with the rebels and that Sweden only "rarely" can stop them from doing so. Some who have gone to Syria are known extremists, some have attacked civilians in Syria, and "many" have returned to Sweden.
