Jewish groups in Stockholm, Malmo, and Gothenburg reported an increase in threats to them following last week's terrorist attacks in Paris. Two men, a woman, and a youth have been arrested for plotting and carrying out a bombing in Malmo on Christmas Eve.




Lars Viks, a Swedish cartoonist who has been targeted for death by Islamist extremists, including al Qaeda, urged the media to avoid succumbing to self-censorship, which he said has led to the current situation "in which satirical pictures with motifs related to Islam are already censored in most media." Swedish citizen and nightclub owner Paul Mardirossian was released from US prison for good behavior, after pleading guilty in 2012 to conspiring to supply weapons to Colombian guerrilla terrorists in exchange for cocaine.




A building in Malmo was bombed with plastic explosives for the second time in two days; police have no suspects. There have been a series of bombings in Malmo recently, including two targeting a justice center that also housed a police station.

A bomb damaged a justice center in Malmo last night; the facility was also bombed in February. The head of Sweden's security service estimated that up to 300 Swedes have left the country to fight for the Islamic State. The national antiterrorism coordinator warned that girls are being trafficked to the Middle East and southern Asia. A nonprofit organization run by defected Islamist fighters claimed to have stopped three teenagers from traveling to Syria to join the Islamic State last month.




After a recent defector from the Islamic State claimed that the group has sleeper cells waiting for instruction in European countries, including Sweden, the state security service Säpo said it is concerned and is exchanging information on the group with other countries. Three Swedish fighters with the Islamic State, all of Somali origin, were killed in Syria on Nov. 9; about six or seven Swedes are said to leave Sweden for Syria every week. The Islamic Association of Sweden said it is "shocked" that the United Arab Emirates has labeled it a terrorist organization.

Sweden's intelligence agency revealed that two terror plots against targets in Sweden have been disrupted. Officials said investigations into the plots, which were being planned by Islamic extremists living in Sweden, are ongoing. An estimated 30 percent of female foreign fighters with Islamist groups in Syria are said to be Swedish.




Sweden's intelligence service is investigating reports that during a TV interview, an Islamic State supporter from Sweden named Sheikh Ahmed threatened violence in the country and war against Sweden and Europe. An estimated 80 Swedes are said to be fighting for rebel groups in Syria. An Uzbek imam who was shot in northern Sweden in 2012 has emerged from a two-year coma.
