Al Qaeda in the Land of the Two Niles has formed a students' group at the University of Khartoum. The students said that the Sudanese government is not pursuing al Qaeda in Sudan.
The US added two Sudanese jihadists to the list of Specially Designated Global terrorists. Abdelbasit Alhaj Alhasan Haj Hamad and Mohamed Makawi Ibrahim Mohamed assassinated a USAID employee and his driver on Jan. 1, 2008 in Khartoum. Makawi is linked to al Qaeda.
Authorities accused Israel of using a vulture tagged with a GPS-equipped camera to spy on Sudan; the military claimed to have captured one such vulture in the Darfur region this month. An Israeli ecologist dismissed the claim, saying the equipment was regularly used for tracking wildlife.
President Bashir threatened retaliation against Israel for an Oct. 24 airstrike on a Sudanese arms warehouse, and said Israel remains "the number one enemy." Israel accuses Sudan of serving as a conduit for Iranian arms flowing into Gaza. Two Iranian warships recently arrived in Sudan.
A munitions factory in Khartoum was destroyed by explosions. The Sudanese government accused Israel of destroying the factory with an air attack. Israeli officials refused to comment, but accused Sudan of aiding terrorism and transferring weapons to Hamas in Gaza with the help of Iran.
