Shabaab captured the southern town of Elberde after government forces abandoned it. The Shabaab spokesman denied claims that the group was planning attacks in Mogadishu. Pirates hijacked a German tanker carrying chemicals.




Fuad Mohammed Shonghole, a top Shabaab military commander, threatened to target the US. "We will cut their throats wherever we find them," he said. The UN implored Shabaab and Hizbul Islam to end the occupation of medical clinics in Mogadishu. Pirates hijacked a Taiwanese freighter.




The African Union peacekeeping force based in Mogadishu said it had "credible information" that "a series of synchronized suicide attacks and planting IEDs" would take place in the capital. Somali journalists exiled in Kenya are being threatened by Shabaab.
