A court in Tatarstan ruled that the writings of Faizrakhman Sattarov, the 84-year-old founder of a banned radical Islamic sect, "incite interreligious hatred and contradict traditional Islamic teachings." The Faizrakhman sect, which rejects Russian law, was discovered last year living in an eight-level catacomb underneath the leader's house.
Security forces claimed to have killed nine suspected Islamist militants during a raid in the city of Buinaksk in Dagestan. Among those killed was a prominent militant leader, Bammatkhan Sheikhov. The militants were linked to number of killings, including the murder of the imam of the main mosque in Buinaksk.

Authorities killed Khasanbi Fakov, the alleged head of the Caucasus Islamist insurgency in Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachayevo-Cherkessia, in a shootout in Nalchik last night. His wife, Irina Ortanova, who was also wanted by authorities for terrorist activity, and two associates were also killed. One policeman died after being seriously wounded during the operation.

Russian authorities claimed to have killed the bodyguard of wanted Caucasus Emirate leader Doku Umarov in a shootout on July 13 in Ingushetia's Sunzha region. The bodyguard, Mikhail Musikhanov, was said to be part of Umarov's inner circle. Dzhamaleil Mutaliyev, another close Umarov associate, was killed in Ingushetia in May. A suspect in the killing of four Dagestani police officers on July 14 was shot dead when he refused to surrender the next day. President Putin accused the US of effectively trapping NSA leaker Edward Snowden in Russia by pressuring other countries not to offer him asylum.
Two suspected Islamist insurgents opened fire on a police car that was heading back to the village of Burshi in Dagestan, killing four police officers. The car was ambushed after the policemen had investigated a robbery.
