The Pakistan People's Party is exploring forming a coalition government with the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement. The former railways minister said the Lal Masjid raid was responsible for the PML-Q's electoral defeat. Security forces arrested 75 suspected Taliban in Swat.




The Pakistan People's Party is set to win the election as both Musharraf and the pro-Taliban Muttahida Majlis-e-Amil suffered heavy defeats at the polls. The Awami National Party won the provincial election in the Northwest Frontier Province. Twenty-seven were killed in election day violence. The Wazir and Daur tribes signed a vague "agreement" with the North Waziristan political administration to oppose "extremism" and "terrorism."

A grand jirga of 286 tribal elders called for the reinstatement of the 2006 North Waziristan Accord. Nine Pakistanis were killed and 36 wounded in violence one day before elections. The death toll in the Feb. 16 suicide attack in Parachinar, Kurram rose to 47 as polls in the city were canceled. A suicide bombing outside a Pakistan People's Party political office in Kurram agency killed 37 and wounded over 100. A suicide bomber killed two and wounded 14 in an attack on an Army media center in Swat. Eight polling booths were bombed in Bajaur. Seventy-five Taliban surrendered in Swat. Police arrested a suicide bomber in Hyderbad.




Police in Sindh province arrested "ex-members of different banned militant outfits who had now formed a new group" and were planning attacks against political leaders in the city of Karachi. Police arrested six Taliban fighters in Swat. German police arrested a Pakistani man for traveling to the tribal areas to provide funding for the Taliban in Afghanistan.




An IED attack against a convoy in Bajaur killed a major and two soldiers and wounded two. Ten paramilitary troops were arrested for negligence in the disappearance of Pakistan's ambassador to Afghanistan. A Taliban group called al Hizb has formed in the Darra Adam Khel region and vowed to attack rival Taliban and security forces. The military has deployed 81,000 soldiers to provide security for the Feb. 18 election.




The Taliban denied kidnapping Pakistan's ambassador to Afghanistan one day after offering a trade for former Taliban commander Mansoor Dadullah. Four Pakistanis were killed and seven wounded in a car bomb attack targeting an MMA leader. The Taliban attacked a fort in Bajaur agency. Politicians are working to get former Lal Masjid chief cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz released from custody.




The Taliban will exchange the kidnapped ambassador to Afghanistan for Mansoor Dadullah. Two nuclear officials were kidnapped in Dera Ismail Khan. Soldiers killed a Taliban fighter as he was preparing to attack them in Tank. The military captured 15 Taliban in Swat.




Pakistan's ambassador to Afghanistan is feared to have been kidnapped in the Khyber agency. Pakistani security forces captured Mansoor Dadullah and five lieutenants in the Zhob district of Baluchistan. A suicide bomber struck an office of the Awami National Party in North Waziristan; 10 were killed and 13 wounded. The government detained 31 Taliban in Swat.




The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff ruled out unilateral attacks inside Pakistan. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid denied Mullah Omar and the leadership is operating from Pakistan. Police arrested 30 "activists" from an unnamed "banned militant organization" operating in Lahore. German police have identified four citizens who are currently training in Pakistan's tribal areas.




Security forces retook the toll booth at the Kohat tunnel after the Taliban captured it the day prior. Sixteen Taliban were captured in Swat. The Foreign Office rejected claims that Taliban and al Qaeda leaders are operating inside Pakistan.




Siraj Haqqani was one of several Taliban leaders conducting secret negotiations with the government to end the fighting in northwestern Pakistan. Security forces blew up a vehicle laden with 700 kilograms of explosives in Swat. The military is investigating the cause of the helicopter crash that killed a senior general and seven members of his staff in South Waziristan. A Pakistani UAV crashed near Peshawar. Pakistan's ambassador to the US claimed Pakistani forces killed Abu Laith al Libi.




Rumors are circulating that American al Qaeda spokesman Adam Gadahn was killed in the same airstrike in North Waziristan that killed Abu Laith al Libi. Police are searching for Ustad Rabbani, a deputy of slain Taliban leader Mullah Dadullah believed to be behind the Nov. 1, 2007 suicide attack on a Pakistan Air Force bus in Sargodha. The Taliban sent a threatening letter to the Frontier Times, which is based out of Peshawar.




A senior general, two brigadiers, and five others were killed in a helicopter crash in South Waziristan. The military freed "tribesman" in South Waziristan as the unofficial cease-fire proceeds. The military denied it is negotiating with the Taliban in South Waziristan. The Taliban declared a ceasefire in South Waziristan and Swat. The Interior Minister said a deal can be cut with Baitullah Mehsud.




The US said "vulnerabilities exist" with the security of Pakistan's nuclear weapons and al Qaeda still has a safe haven in northwestern Pakistan. Only six of the 24 districts in the Northwest Frontier Province are considered to have a "normal" security situation to allow elections. The government may launch a "search operation" to clear al Qaeda from Mardan. Police arrested three suicide bombers in Punjab province. A bombing at a hospital in Landi Kotal destroyed several computers while police defused a bomb in Peshawar.




Ten Pakistanis were killed in a suicide attack on a military bus in Rawalpindi. The captured leader of Jundullah claimed 600 suicide bombers are inside the city of Karachi. Suicide bombers have been reported to kidnap families to use them as cover to attack security forces. Police discovered 40 boxes of ammunition and 200 rockets during raids in Darra Adam Khel.




Police arrested a teenage suicide bomber and two others in Dera Ismail Khan. Security forces destroyed Taliban hideouts in Darra Adamkhel. In a soon-to-be published posthumous autobiography, Benazir Bhutto accused Osama bin Laden's son Hamza of trying to kill her.




Mullah Omar ordered the Taliban in Pakistan and Afghanistan to stop "slaughtering" spies. Two policemen, two Taliban fighters, and two civilians were killed in a clash in Mardan. Baitullah Mehsud offered to stop terror attacks in exchange for the release of his men; the government denied negotiating with Baitullah. The military captured five Taliban fighters in Swat while eight of Fazlullah's aides were released on bail. An assessment stated the Taliban is operating in 18 hideouts in Swat.




A suicide bomber killed six security forces during an attack in Mir Ali, North Waziristan. The military recovered some of the ammunition seized by the Taliban in Darra Adam Khel. A Pakistan Air Force truck was damaged in an IED attack while traveling between airbases outside Peshawar. The Kohat Tunnel is being reopened to light traffic.
