Benazir Bhutto ruled out discussions with Musharraf as she was placed under a seven-day house arrest. NWFP Governor Orakzai said the military did not exchange Taliban leaders for captured soldiers. Orakzai also said the situation in the tribal areas was conducive for holding elections. Upwards of 800 Taliban are active in Swat, said a government official. A solider was wounded in an IED attack in Miramshah, North Waziristan.

Musharraf continues to appease the Taliban. Among the 25 prisoners released in exchange for over 200 captured soldiers include Obaidullah, the Taliban's number three in command, the Taliban commander of Zabul province, two brothers of Mullah Usmani, and Baitullah Mehsud's cousin.
