[UPDATE 2] A missile strike killed 12 Taliban in Khushali Tari Khel, North Waziristan as negotiations for a new North Waziristan Accord are underway. Baitullah Mehsud appointed Faqir Muhammad the chief negotiator for the Pakistani Taliban. The government admits it is fighting an insurgency in the tribal areas. Five members of Jundallah and two policemen were killed in a shootout in Karachi. Fifty Taliban were reported killed during the three-day battle in Darra Adam Khel. The military regained control of a fort in Swat.




Missile strike in North Waziristan kills 12

Twelve Taliban reported killed as negotiations for a peace accord are underway. The event mirrors a strike that sabotaged a Bajaur peace agreement in late 2006.


The government is renegotiating the North Waziristan Accord with the Taliban. The Afghan Taliban denied Baitullah Mehsud has been dismissed. President Musharraf claimed the tribal areas have been largely cleared of the Taliban. The military retook a fort captured by the Taliban in Swat over three months ago. A policeman was beheaded in Swat. The seven "gunmen" who held children hostage in a school in Bannu have been set free.

Provincial government is conducting negotiations with "tribesmen." Afghan Taliban denies Baitullah Mehsud has been removed as leader of the Pakistani Taliban as operations continue in South Waziristan.


A group of seven "militants" took more than 250 children hostage at a school while attempting to escape from police forces in Bannu. The men later turned the children over and surrendered to a tribal jirga. The government denied al Qaeda operative Rashid Rauf is secretly in custody. The military is repairing the Kohat Tunnel and said it recovered the supply trucks seized by the Taliban.

Pakistan denies escaped British terror suspect in detention




The military captured 50 Taliban suspects in Swat. The bodies of three of 13 soldiers captured by the Taliban in South Waziristan were found near Ladha. The Taliban killed three paramilitary troops in Orakzai and executed a "US spy" in Mohmand. The Taliban extended the cease-fire in North Waziristan until Feb. 10.

The military stopped operations at the request of a peace committee while Taliban continues to attack Pakistani forces. Twenty-five Taliban reported killed at the Kohat Tunnel.

An unconfirmed report said Baitullah was dismissed as Pakistani Taliban leader by Mullah Omar.
