The son of Defense Minister Al-Thani is said to have been kidnapped in the Tripoli suburb of Janzur by gunmen. A member of Prime Minister Zeidan's staff was kidnapped in Tripoli on Sept. 23. Former Guantanamo inmate Abdulhamid Abdussalam El Ghazzawi, 50, has arrived in Libya from Georgia, where he had been transferred by US authorities in 2010. He is said to be a veteran al Qaeda associate and member of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group. Arsonists partially destroyed a 7,600-square meter "peace flag" in Benghazi; it was the largest peace flag in the world.
A popular Sufi cleric was assassinated in Derna; a group called Vanguards Of The Caliphate claimed the attack. Derna, which like Benghazi has seen a number of political assassinations this year, is a known stronghold of Ansar al Sharia. A commander of the SSC militia was murdered yesterday in Tripoli. Prime Minister Zeidan's press office denied reports that protesters at the Benghazi airport prevented him on Sept. 21 from entering the city. An armed gang in Benghazi shot and killed a businessman that same day.
A Benghazi criminal investigation officer was killed by a car bomb yesterday; two more car bombs detonated in Benghazi the day before. US special forces said to be involved in a training mission at Salahuddin reportedly withdrew after the theft of "important" equipment last month in two raids by a militia. The US announced plans to train as many as 8,000 Libyan soldiers at two joint US-Bulgarian military bases in Bulgaria. The local Abusleem Martyrs' Brigade told Derna University officials that they must segregate male and female students if the brigade is to provide security.
A powerful car bomb detonated outside the Benghazi offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, injuring two guards and destroying the front of the building. The blast, which occurred on the one-year anniversary of the attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi, involved such a large quantity of explosives that the bomb vehicle was destroyed and two nearby buildings were also damaged. Prime Minister Zeidan blamed the attack on "a force that wants no state and to turn Libya to a battlefield of terrorism and explosion." He said a similar bomb had been found and defused yesterday outside the Foreign Ministry in Tripoli.
A retired colonel was assassinated and his son critically injured by a car bomb in Benghazi. Two government ministries closed on Sept. 8 after a "polite request" by protesters entering their offices, who said they should stop working. Libya is working on boosting military ties with Sudan. The National Security Committee said that the UN embargo on arms to Libya must be lifted in order for the country's borders to become secure.
