A new US intelligence study revealed that Revolutionary Guards Corps will command Iranian naval forces in the Persian Gulf. Russia's energy minister pledged a quick completion of Iran's first nuclear power station contracted out to a Russian firm.
President Ahmedinejad announced Iran will build 10 new nuclear sites to enrich uranium. A top Iranian lawmaker said the country will not give up its "inalienable and legal right" to nuclear power. The parliament called for decreased cooperation with the IAEA.
Ahmad Khatami, a senior cleric, said Iran will produce its own nuclear fuel if the IAEA agreement collapses. Russia said the Bushehr nuclear plant will come online by the end of the year. Russia purportedly agreed to ship the S-300 anti-aircraft missile system.
The IAEA censured Iran for failing to cooperate with inquiries on its nuclear program. Iran filed new espionage charges against a jailed Iranian-American scholar. Iran seized the Nobel Prize for Human Rights lawyer Shirin Ebadi and froze her bank account.
The head of the IAEA said he is "disappointed" by Iran's lack of cooperation on the nuclear issue. Iran's envoy to the IAEA said any UN resolution would "damage the currently constructive atmosphere." Iran and Venezuela signed 12 Memorandums of Understanding as President Ahmedinejad completes his state visit.
President Ahmedinejad said Iran is ready to cooperate with Brazil to build nuclear plants. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei said Iran's top priority is confronting "soft warfare which is aimed at creating doubt, discord and pessimism among the mass of people." Seven recently detained Jundallah members will be tried in court.
