The younger brother of al Qaeda emir Ayman al Zawahiri has called for jihad in Mali and threatened France, as well as other countries. He "organized" last week's protest at the French Embassy in Cairo. Al Qaeda banners were on display during the protest.
"We in al Qaeda announce that we carried out the blessed commando operation," Mokhtar Belmokhtar, the emir of the Those who sign with Blood Brigade, said in a video.
"With the rescue attempt, France has voluntarily signed Allex's death warrant," the terror group said in an official statement. Shabaab later announced he was executed. The French intelligence agent has been held by Shabaab since July 2009.
Moezeddine Garsallaoui, a Swiss citizen, led the al Qaeda-linked group, and trained Mohamed Merah, the Toulouse shooter who killed seven people. He appears to have been killed in a drone strike.
Newly released intelligence files on Mohamed Merah indicate he had been identified as a dangerous Islamist for well over a year before he killed seven people. And an audiotape suggests he trained for jihad in Pakistan and was working for al Qaeda in France.
