A senior official said citizens are free to go to Syria to fight and will not be prosecuted upon their return.

The North Sinai governor said that while there are "Salafi jihadi elements" operating in the Sinai, al Qaeda does not have a base in the area. Authorities stopped a drug and arms smuggling operation near the Libyan border. A Coptic teacher was fined $14,000 for insulting Islam. Hundreds of Coptic Christians protested after at least seven Christians, including a child, were beaten and robbed by unknown assailants outside a monastery in Assuit last week.
A counterterrorism officer was killed by Islamist militants operating in the Sinai Peninsula. Hamas denied that it was involved in prison escapes during the uprising against Hosni Mubarak.
The United States recently agreed to continue providing Egypt with $1.3 billion in military aid despite concerns of rights issues. President Morsi said calls for new elections by the opposition "absurd." A German Islamist was barred entry to Egypt by authorities. Various Islamist groups including the Muslim Brotherhood partook in anti-Israel rallies in Cairo.
A court sentenced 43 people, including 19 Americans, to jail terms ranging from one to five years for working at "unregistered" NGOs. Secretary of State Kerry condemned the sentences and said it was a "politically-motivated trial." A youth activist was sentenced to six months in jail for insulting President Morsi.

A checkpoint in the Sinai was attacked by unidentified gunmen for the 39th time since February 2011. The Armed Forces sent reinforcements to the Sinai to track down wanted militants. Explosives intended to be used for the creation of smuggling tunnels were seized by authorities in the Sinai. A court ruled the Muslim Brotherhood-controlled parliament to be illegal, but allowed it to continue operations until a new parliament emerges.
