The Egyptian army rejected a request by Hamas' leader to meet. Authorities told Hamas leaders staying in Cairo to find a new hotel due to upcoming protests against the group. President Morsi appointed Adel Mohamed al Khayat as governor of Luxor; al Khayat is a member of Gamaa al-Islamiyya, a known terrorist group. The Muslim Brotherhood now holds 13 of 27 governorates. Security sources warned of the infiltration into the Sinai of 30 "dangerous" jihadists. Prosecutors said an al Qaeda-linked group was behind the February 2011 kidnapping of a number of security personnel in the Sinai.




New Governor Shock to Some Inside Egypt




An Egyptian cleric and his son were given suspended sentences and ordered to pay a fine for burning a Bible during a protest outside the US embassy in Cairo in September. A senior Muslim Brotherhood official slammed Hezbollah for its role in the Syrian civil war.




President Morsi cut all diplomatic ties with the Syrian regime and said he was ready to start providing financial aid to the opposition. Morsi also called on Hezbollah to leave Syria. Authorities claimed to have arrested a man linked to Israel's Mossad. A flight from Egypt to New York was diverted after the discovery of a threatening note.




A military spokesman denied reports that suggested authorities had discovered the identity of those behind the recent kidnapping of seven security personnel in the Sinai. An Israeli official recently met with Egyptian officials to discuss the security situation in the Sinai. A senior official said citizens are free to go to Syria to fight and will not be prosecuted upon their return.

Authorities seized iron that was being smuggled into the Gaza Strip from Egypt. Four smuggling tunnels between Egypt and Gaza were also destroyed. Egyptian Islamists are planning a demonstration on June 30 to counter those of the opposition. A group of Islamists also accused two businessmen and the Gulf States of plotting chaos in Egypt.

Mohammed al Zawahiri and two of his Egyptian jihadist allies have issued a statement criticizing the Democratic Jihad Party. "Jihad and Democracy are opposites and don't mix," they say.

The North Sinai governor said that while there are "Salafi jihadi elements" operating in the Sinai, al Qaeda does not have a base in the area. Authorities stopped a drug and arms smuggling operation near the Libyan border. A Coptic teacher was fined $14,000 for insulting Islam. Hundreds of Coptic Christians protested after at least seven Christians, including a child, were beaten and robbed by unknown assailants outside a monastery in Assuit last week.




A counterterrorism officer was killed by Islamist militants operating in the Sinai Peninsula. Hamas denied that it was involved in prison escapes during the uprising against Hosni Mubarak.

The United States recently agreed to continue providing Egypt with $1.3 billion in military aid despite concerns of rights issues. President Morsi said calls for new elections by the opposition "absurd." A German Islamist was barred entry to Egypt by authorities. Various Islamist groups including the Muslim Brotherhood partook in anti-Israel rallies in Cairo.




A court sentenced 43 people, including 19 Americans, to jail terms ranging from one to five years for working at "unregistered" NGOs. Secretary of State Kerry condemned the sentences and said it was a "politically-motivated trial." A youth activist was sentenced to six months in jail for insulting President Morsi.

A checkpoint in the Sinai was attacked by unidentified gunmen for the 39th time since February 2011. The Armed Forces sent reinforcements to the Sinai to track down wanted militants. Explosives intended to be used for the creation of smuggling tunnels were seized by authorities in the Sinai. A court ruled the Muslim Brotherhood-controlled parliament to be illegal, but allowed it to continue operations until a new parliament emerges.
