Order restored after fresh Myanmar religious unrest

A group called the "Mujahideen of Arakan" announced it has declared war against the Burmese government and against Buddhists living in Rakhine state, and urged all Muslims to engage in jihad as a matter of religious duty. A US-based rights group called on the government to address anti-Muslim propaganda and violence. Indian and Bangladeshi intelligence agencies believe jihadist groups including Lashkar-e-Taiba are exploiting the plight of the Rohingya to establish new bases.

President Thein Sein promised to release all "prisoners of conscience" in Burmese jails within six months. He said that Burma was moving from a period of authoritarianism to democracy, with a "more inclusive national identity, including Buddhists and Muslims," and vowed "zero tolerance" toward acts of violence.
