Haqqani Network captures US soldier in Afghanistan

Mullah Sangeen Zadran, a senior lieutenant to Sirajuddin Haqqani, took credit for the kidnapping and said the soldier's fate is in the hands of the Taliban leadership.

The Kandahar police chief and four policemen were killed in a shootout with what appears to be Afghan guards who work for the US. The US military denied involvement in the incident. An explosion at an IED factory in Paktika province killed at least 9 Haqqani Network fighters. One ISAF soldier was killed in eastern Afghanistan.




The Taliban killed seven policemen during two ambushes in Farah province. Afghan and Coalition forces detained six Haqqani Network fighters and conducted an airstrike against a group of fighters during separate operations in the Musa Khel district of Khost province. The Afghan police force will be expanded by an additional 10,000 officers. US envoy Richard Holbrooke described anti-drug efforts in Afghanistan as a failure.

Afghan and Coalition forces killed "several" Taliban fighters and detained nearly a dozen more during operations in Helmand, Wardak, and Ghazni provinces. One ISAF soldier was killed in an IED attack. The National Directorate of Security arrested seven members of a suicide bombing cell who were plotting to conduct attacks in Kabul. Lieutenant General Rodriguez has assumed command of the ISAF ground forces in Afghanistan.

Senior Taliban leaders targeted in yesterday's Predator strikes

Baitullah Mehsud, Qari Hussain Mehsud, and Mullah Sangeen Zadran were the targets of the follow-on Predator attack in South Waziristan that killed 83 Taliban fighters. Sangeen and Qari Hussain were reported killed, although this has not been confirmed.
