Suspected Islamist insurgents injured five policemen in a bombing at a market in Songkhla province. Insurgents planted the remotely detonated bomb under a bench in the rarely violence-stricken province. A janitor was murdered by insurgents as he was traveling home from the school he worked at in Pattani province.


Philippines

Gunmen kidnapped 12 villagers in Basilan island who were returning from a fishing trip. No group has claimed responsibility but weapons and a ransom have been demanded for their release. Clan rivalry is the suspected reason for the kidnappings, although Abu Sayyaf has been active in the area.


Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

Two suspected Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb Islamist fighters were killed and others were wounded in clashes with Algerian authorities. Three soldiers were also injured during the clashes in the Tiffellat region, 200 kilometers from Algiers. AQIM denied that 28 members of the terror organization defected to Mauritanian authorities.


Philippines

Suspected Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels killed a United Nations World Food Program driver on his way to deliver rice to war-stricken civilians. The UN driver was stopped by Islamist rebels in the township of Marantao, who killed him after he refused to unload the 488 bags of rice in the truck destined for civilians.


Thailand

Islamist insurgents killed three people in Narathiwat province. The gunmen killed two Muslim politicians and a Buddhist teacher in their van shortly after they left a meeting with Thai military officials at a local military base.

Algerian authorities killed Izza Rezki, also known as Abou Djaffar, who was a chief financial backer of al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and a close aide to AQIM’s leader Abdelmalek Droukdel. Eight suspected Boko Haram members were arrested by Nigerian authorities in Niger state. A tip-off by civilians in the city of Minna led to the arrests of the eight men who were discovered with knives, cutlasses, and various arms.


Nigeria

Two worshipers were killed and one wounded by Boko Haram Islamists during an attack at a mosque during Friday prayers in the northeastern city of Maiduguri. Two gunmen driving a motorcycle taxi indiscriminately shot into a Wahabist mosque. The radical group considers Wahabism heretical.


Indonesia

Indonesian authorities arrested Joko Daryono, alias Thoyib, for his role as treasurer for the terror-sponsor organization Jamaah Ansharut Tauhid. Founded by the radical Islamist cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, JAT is responsible for funding and assisting terror groups based in Aceh.

Suspected Boko Haram members killed a Nigerian soldier and wounded another in Borno state. The two soldiers were eating at a restaurant in Maiduguri when men armed with Kalashnikov rifles fired at the soldiers from their motorbike.

Authorities have begun to deport over 700 immigrants in the north that they suspect could be susceptible to recruitment by Boko Haram. The security crackdown caused by fears of immigrants joining Boko Haram has led the government to expel migrants back to Chad, Niger, and Cameroon.

Security forces arrested a bombing suspect in Manila thought to be linked to the Abu Sayyaf Group or MILF. Intelligence indicate that 10 foreign terrorists are meeting with Abu Sayyaf leaders and planning attacks in the Manila Metro area. Police seized 562 kilograms of bomb-making material and detained four people in Limay, Bataan.

Suspected Abu Sayyaf Group fighters have kidnapped a woman in Basilan province. The Abu Sayyaf fighters responsible for the abduction in Ungkaya Pukan town appear to be led by Nur Hassan. The withdrawal of the 1st Marine Brigade in Basilan province has stoked fears of a resurgence of violence.

Muslim insurgents killed a village chief on his motorcycle in Pattani™s Khok Pho district in a drive-by shooting. A 78-year old man was killed in a drive-by shooting while he was heading home in Yala™s Muang district. Insurgents have been blamed for the murder.


Indonesia

Indonesian authorities detained a known terror suspect and leader in Aceh after his arrest in Malaysia. Taufik Marzuki, alias Abu Sayyaf, heads the Islamic Defenders Front and Al Qaeda in Pidie, Aceh. He was in Malaysia attempting to acquire weapons and ammunition.


Thailand

Islamist insurgents ambushed and killed a Muslim village defense volunteer and wounded another as they were driving home on their motorcycle in Pattani’s Khoke Pho district. A Muslim villager was killed and another critically wounded after they were attacked by a suspected insurgent gunman in Yala™s Raman district.


Nigeria

Boko Haram fighters shot and killed a police officer as he was manning a checkpoint in the northern state of Bauchi. The Boko Haram insurgency has spread to three provinces in the far north.


Thailand

Muslim insurgents carried out nine bombings in seven districts of Narathiwat province Monday morning, killing one person and injuring more than 10 others. Similar bombings in Yala and Pattani province left three others injured. Buddhist rubber plantation workers were the primary target of the attacks.


Algeria

Suspected Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb fighters killed two Algerian soldiers and wounded three others in an IED attack on a military convoy in eastern Boumerdes province. Algerian Prime Minister Ouyahia has pledged to “the complete disappearance of this plague [terrorism]” from Algeria.


Nigeria

Six suspected Boko Haram insurgents attacked the Gulani police station in northern Yobe state. Police officers fended off the attackers after one gunman was killed. At least three police officers were wounded in the attack.


Philippines

Authorities arrested five suspects in the bus bombing in the town of Matalam on the southern island of Mindanao. One detainee gave the whereabouts of four other accomplices in the attack who were later arrested in a raid in Cotabato city. Their connection to the Islamist groups blamed for the attack remains undisclosed.


Nigeria

Suspected Boko Haram gunmen killed a local chief in the northern city of Bauchi. Neighborhood chief Tukur Ahmad was killed in front of his home after attending Friday prayers at the local mosque. The Nigerian army has been deployed to Maiduguri in an attempt to halt the escalating violence.


Thailand

Insurgents killed a Muslim schoolteacher after he left mosque in Yarang district of Pattani province. Two insurgents killed a Buddhist official of the Provincial Electricity Authority in Pattani’s Khok Pho district.


Philippines

Suspected Moro Islamic Liberation Front fighters killed two village officials in Maguindanao province. The two officials were ambushed by gunmen after their vehicles were hit by landmines. The chairman and councilman of Barangay Liab in Mamasapano town were participating in electoral activities.
