Pakistan

A top Taliban and al Qaeda operative is thought to have been killed in the May 15 airstrike in the Khyber. Security forces killed 42 Taliban fighters in Arakzai and detained 14 Lashkar-e-Islam fighters in Peshawar. Two French journalists detained for spying on May 28 have been transferred to a jail in Peshawar.


Iraq

An Iraqi girl was killed after Iranian forces shelled Kurdish areas in the north. Iraqi Special Operations Forces detained two al Qaeda operatives in Al Qaim. The US military reiterated it is on track to reduce the number of troops in country to 50,000 by the end of August.





Afghanistan

The Taliban killed six policemen in Badakhshan, five civilians in Khost, and an ISAF soldier in the south, and torched five ISAF fuel tankers in Ghazni. The Taliban threatened to kill representatives of Ghazni who attend an upcoming peace jirga. The government freed a Taliban commander in Baghlan in exchange for five kidnapped police officers.



Russia

Security forces killed three insurgents in a clash in Dagestan. Police detained six suspects who are thought to be involved in the May 26 bombing in Stavropol that killed seven people.


Iran

ISAF commander General Stanley McChrystal said Iran is training Taliban fighters and providing them with weapons. Israel reportedly deployed missile submarines in the Persian Gulf. A politician said Russian and Chinese ties would be downgraded if the countries vote for sanctions.






Thailand

An official of Tambon Bor Hin Administration Organisation was killed in a drive-by shooting while he was at a tea shop in Panare district in Pattani. A motorcycle bomb exploded in Sisakhon district of Narathiwat, wounding a member of the Municipal council. A bomb injured two police on patrol in Yaring district in Pattani.



Pakistan

Security forces killed 12 Taliban fighters during airstrikes in Arakzai. The Taliban again took credit for the attack on two Ahmadi mosques in Lahore and encouraged assassinations against the MQM political party. General Kiyani will decide if and when an operation in North Waziristan will take place.







Somalia

Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden has been elected to to lead Somalia’s parliament. Shabaab executed a man accused of murder in Marka. Hizbul Islam is rounding up “bandits” south of the capital.



Afghanistan

The Taliban have taken control of a district in Nuristan. US and Afghan forces killed the Taliban’s shadow governor of Baghlan and 11 fighters. Iraq

Security forces detained four Syrian al Qaeda leaders in Mosul, three terrorists in Baghdad, and two insurgents in Fallujah. Insurgents killed two soldiers in Baghdad and a policeman in Mosul.
