Somalia

The US Navy has surrounded the hijacked Ukrainian-flagged vessel transporting weapons to Sudan. The secretary of the Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia called Shabaab “criminals.” Seven people were killed and 17 wounded during fighting in Mogadishu.



Afghanistan

The Taliban leadership denied it was conducting negotiations with the Afghan government. Gulbuddin Hekmatyar claimed responsibility for an August ambush that killed 10 French soldiers in Kabul province. A US soldier was killed in an attack in eastern Afghanistan.


Algeria

A suicide bomber killed three civilians and wounded six in an attack on a police checkpoint in Dellys. Security forces killed three “terrorists” during an operation in Tebessa. Police have increased the number of checkpoints in Tizi Ouzou.


Lebanon

Five people were killed and 25 were wounded when a roadside bomb was detonated on a bus carrying Lebanese soldiers north of Tripoli. Four soldiers were killed and 22 were wounded in the attack. The Lebanese Army command said the attack was designed to derail reconciliation between Sunni and Alawi groups in Tripoli.

Pakistan

A Polish engineer was kidnapped and his drivers and translator were killed in Nowshera. Security forces killed 15 Taliban fighters detained 18 in Peshawar. President Zardari said Osama bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri would be tried in Pakistan if captured. General Kiyani said the tribes are backing the Army against the Taliban.


Iraq

Thirty-two Iraqis were killed in a series of bombings in Baghdad. Iraqi forces killed one insurgent and detained 29 in Baghdad. Coalition forces captured three Hezbollah Brigades fighters in Naharwan and seven al Qaeda operatives throughout Iraq. Iraqi security forces are planning security for the end of Ramadan celebrations in Najaf.


Afghanistan

Afghanistan’s foreign minister denied negotiations were underway with the Taliban based out of Quetta. A senior female police officer in Kandahar was assassinated outside of her home. Police detained 12 men believed to be involved in yesterday’s bombing in New Delhi that killed two, including a child, and wounded 22. Two men dropped the bomb off of a motorcycle in a market. Police also detained two men for making a call threatening follow-up attacks in the capital.
