North Korea: Special Edition of Global Crisis Watch

gcw-logo.jpgNorth Korea has detonated its first nuclear device, sending the international community into a crisis over how to respond. The debate over possible sanctions and even a blockade has begun in the United Nations. There are questions about whether the test was successful or not due to the yield of the explosion, but regardless the Hermit Kingdom has entered the nuclear club. Japan has detected signs of a second detonation, however South Korea and the United States have denied this. All the while, Iran is watching the actions of the international community, probing for weaknesses as it developes an Iranian bomb.

Global Crisis Watch convenes a roundtable discussion on North Korea and the next possible steps with Rohan Gunaratna, Institute of Defense and Strategic Studies and author of “Inside al Qaeda“, Daveed Gartenstein-Ross, counterterrorism consultant and author of “My Year Inside Radical Islam,” and Josh Manchester, Marine Reserve Officer and author of The Adventures of Chester.

I had to edit the link to get it to work (remove the “link: ” in the front of it). You may want to check your HTML.

Hi Bill.. long time. You sure have come a long way since the debates with Zayin and Co.
Any chance this whole thing was staged (with conventional explosives) by North Korea to make us believe they detonated a nuclear device or are you convinced this is for real?

I know it’s a different topic, but I want to prove I’m a man of my word:
“United States now has preliminary evidence of radioactivity from North Korea’s nuclear test ground, indicating it did indeed carry out a test, a U.S. official tells CNN… MORE… ”
I said I would come back on this issue, and thus I have too:
My original take, on another post, and on several other Blogs, was that the NK’s faked this “nuke” test; no radiation for a week, seemed to confirm it!
Anyway, regardless, it now appears that I was INCORRECT, and my “call” was wrong.
The above quote is from Drudge, with more to come!
    My apologies….

RE: Dale’s comments… if it was real it must have been pretty small or a dud.. no? Strange it took so long to detect the fallout. Not to sound too conspiracy-like, but would it be possible for NK, after realizing everyone was questioning whether this really happened, to release radiation a week after the test to continue the lie? Just really seems strange to me nothing was detected for so long.
